Job Description

ESESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Sensitivity to the cultural diversity of others

Provides the Agency with developmentally appropriate communication and feeding programs to be carried out through individual or small group therapy sessions, including necessary lifting, moving and positioning as per agency guidelines.

Develops appropriate receptive and expressive language programming to meet the needs of children on the assigned caseload to be carried out in the classroom setting.

Evaluates the need for and implements the use of augmentative communication systems within daily programming.

Provides on-going consultation, support and training for teachers and assistants in carrying out therapy suggestions and programs in the classroom.

Evaluates developmental skill levels in the areas of speech, language and social development based on formalized/informalized assessments on an interdisciplinary team.

Works closely with parents in providing appropriate carryover of home programming for the child’s language and communication needs (i.e. meeting in the agency with family members for training or observation sessions relating to implementation of therapy techniques or programs.)

Participates on an interdisciplinary team whose responsibility is to provide initial and on-going diagnostic evaluations for each child and to establish appropriate therapeutic goals and habilitative program recommendations.

Works cooperatively with the social worker responsible for coordinating and implementing the interdisciplinary team goals and recommendations for each child.

Maintains accurate and current records on each child in the therapist’s caseload and to report on-going needs and progress of those children to the appropriate staff.

Understands the psychological and medical characteristics of the population served by the Agency.

Makes necessary referrals to professionals of other disciplines (i.e.: medical consultation, audiological screenings, video-swallow studies, equipment concerns, etc.) in cooperation with the parents and social worker to improve the student’s programming.

Evaluates and implements individualized programs within the classroom setting for students with oral-motor/feeding concerns related to his/her disability.

Is available for various discipline related meetings and in-service sessions as are deemed necessary by the Senior Speech Pathologist and/or Clinic Director.

Provides supervisory and didactic services for area college students interested in pursuing therapy careers when deemed necessary by Senior Speech Language Pathologist.

Participates in Agency functions and various community meetings as requested.

Works on agency committees relating to the field of speech pathology as determined by the Senior Speech Pathologist.

Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree (M.A./M.S.) in Speech Pathology; NYS license required, ASHA certification ( CCC) preferred and two (2) to four (4) years related experience and/or training.
