Job Description

The Family Support Organization of Essex County is a family-driven, family-centered nonprofit that provides peer support, education and advocacy for parents of children who have emotional, behavioral, mental health, substance use and developmental or intellectual challenges.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Family Partners provide in-home peer support, education and advocacy information to other parents/caregivers who are facing similar challenges throughout Essex County.

Assist and encourage families with expressing theirs needs at meetings, such as Child Family Team meetings, and court hearings.

Encourage parents to attend support groups and be able to clearly articulate the benefits of support groups and building natural supports.

Demonstrate a learning approach to working with families from different cultural, religious, economic, social, and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Conduct Family Assessment of Strengths and Needs at intervals and create a plan of action for caregiver development towards the goal of being an independent advocate for their family’s needs.

Attend training at least 4 times per calendar year on topics related to job specific activities upon aproval. Achieve and maintain successfully Family Partner certification/re-certification qualifications within the designated timeframes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a parent or guardian of a child with emotional, behavioral or mental health challenges and intellectual or developmental disabilities who has successfully navigated a child serving system on behalf of a child.
  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Bi-Lingual a plus – Spanish, French Creole or Portuguese.
  • Tech-Savvy – comfortable using smartphones, tablets and computers.
  • Must have valid NJ Driver’s License, reliable transportation and car insurance.
  • Must be flexible between the hours of 8:30am and 6:00pm Monday – Friday
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and a good listener.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal, written, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative, creativity, be dependable, reliable, and work well independently as well as with others.
