Job Description

*This posting is for a part-time position that will convert to full-time and will focus on outreaching to the Hispanic disability community. Must be biliterate in Spanish to qualify for the position, subject to a language test*

The Independent Living Specialist (ILS) is responsible for assisting persons with disabilities to receive appropriate services, which will enable them to live more independently and develops contacts and provides services to consumers in communities within 8 wards of the city.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

– Conducts intake and assessments of all consumers seeking independent living services.

– Receives and responds appropriately to I&R requests, by phone (voice or videophone), written requests, or in person, provide information and make appropriate referrals in a timely manner.

– Provides orientation to Independent Living Philosophy and I.L. services to new consumers and those who request individualized services.

– Provides the five core services: Information & Referral, Advocacy, Peer Support, Independent Living Skills Training, Transition.

– Maintains a thorough understanding of the needs of persons with disabilities and what resources are available in the community.

– Keeps detailed records of all contacts including I&R, advocacy, outreach and documentation of confident consumer files using the CIL Manager

– Conducts community training and in-service when appropriate.

– Exercises incentive, ingenuity and sound judgment in technical matters and workload coordination.  Maintain and update the information resource file as a complete, organized and usable database of disability-related services and organizations.

– Conducts activities to reach un-served and underserved populations.
